Found this interesting period photograph. Looks like a bayonet lug ? Never seen anything like it, any ideas ?

It's a forearm reinforcement. The snap and warp very easily. If you look at a lot of originals there's usually a hairline crack in most. This band was meant to help get rid of that issue.

There were 2 types of rivets used on M1(A1) foregrips. One was of poor diesign and affected the foregrip. The band was a field ordnance fix for those TMSG's that had the weaker foregrip rivet design.

Ended up buying one of those M1A1 barrel bands. Only $55. Deals. Sure looks a lot like a clamp that belongs on a bicycle.
